| Income band | Rate |
|---|---|
| Up to $15,600 | 10.5% |
| $15,601 – $53,500 | 17.5% |
| $53,501 – $78,100 | 30% |

| Over $180,000 | 39% |
Plus the ACC earner levy at 1.75% of gross earnings, capped at $156,641 of income (maximum levy $2,741.22/year). Student loan repayments are 12% of income above the $24,128 annual threshold. KiwiSaver's default employee contribution rate rose from 3% to 3.5% from 1 April 2026.
Example: A $95,000 salary with default 3.5% KiwiSaver
On a $95,000 gross salary, PAYE income tax comes to approximately $21,228.
The ACC earner levy at 1.75% adds approximately $1,663, and the default 3.5% KiwiSaver contribution takes approximately $3,325.
That leaves approximately $68,785 take-home — about 72% of the gross salary — or roughly $1,323 a week.
Turning off KiwiSaver contributions would add that $3,325 back to take-home pay, but it's worth weighing against the employer match and long-term retirement savings you'd be giving up — the KiwiSaver calculator shows what that trade-off looks like over a working life.
